Our WiFi Setup

This is how I designed our WiFi System.

I was planning on writing a few blog posts on our internet systems. People have been so curious, and I try to explain my network. Sometimes I see their eyes glaze over. I planned it so it makes sense to me. There are some other programs not only help me find open wifi signals. They also help me rebroadcast those signals and create our own home network. I will definitely write a post on those programs and maybe even do a video on how i make them all work together. This page will change as my system evolves.

I typically only use one antenna at a time.

So Far it has worked for us, there may be better options.

I have three antennas

  1. Ideaworks Long Distance USB-Powered Wi-Fi Antenna (72-6612)– If you only want to buy one item and call it done this is it. This is plug and play people. It doesn’t get any easier than this. I had this antenna on top of the digital tv antenna for a year before I drove it off. It comes with like a 25′ cable so just run it to where you intend on using it the most. This picks up WiFi signals up to 1/2 mile away.

  2. TP-LINK TL-ANT2424B 2.4GHz 24dBi Directional Grid Parabolic Antenna, N Female connector, weather resistant – I mount this on a pole I keep in the van. I have a little bracket I made for it on the trailer. This is a super power antenna, I have yet to use it to its fullest potential. I’ve read you can receive WiFi signals 7+ miles away. I will update this when I test that range out.
Don’t Forget the cord – TRENDnet Low Loss Reverse SMA Female to N-Type Male Weatherproof Connector Cable (8M, 26.2ft.) TEW-L208 It has like six inches of cord that ends in an N-Type connector. Without the cord I would have been at a loss on how to attach it to anything. You will also need the Alfa Card that I explain below.
  3. Blackzebra® 2400hz 2.4ghz 15dbi Yagi Rp-sma External Female Wireless Wifi High Gain Booster Extender Directional Antenna Fit for Router Mode –-You will also need an extension cord with this as the cord attached is about a foot.   yoomall 5M Antenna WIFI RP-SMA Female to Male Extensionl Cable

The Parabolic and the Yagi Wifi require an Alfa Card

There are two options for the alfa card

  1. Alfa AWUS036NHA High Gain Wireless B/G/N USB Adaptor – Long-Rang Wi-Fi Network Adapter With 5dBi and 9dBi Antenna for Wardriving & Range Extension – Windows XP / Vista 64-Bit /128-Bit Windows 7 Compatible – Atheros Chipset -This one I’ve used for about a year. I’ve beat this thing up, it has lived months in my laptop case. It finally quit on me three weeks ago. I have no explination on why it quit. It was actually a really inconvienient time for it to quit. I have to wait until Thanksgiving to get the new one.
  2. Alfa AWUS051NH 500mW High Gain 802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g, 802.11n high power Wireless USB A / B / G / N Wireless WiFi Network adapter With a 5dBi Rubber Antenna and Suction cup / Clip Window Mount – High speed Up to 300 Mbps – With Hot Swap Support
-I have not yet used this one yet. Since I had to order another adapter I figured I’d upgrade. All the reports I’ve read say this is a much better card, and since I’m planning on getting into ethical network penitration testing this was the card I needed.

Why You Need A Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Public WiFi is not safe. If you are using public WiFI people may be monitoring your session. This means that anything you do and anything you type can be seen. Yes, that means your passwords and account numbers. In steps a VPN, a program which encrypts your data and saves your privacy. If your living a nomadic lifestyle I would highly recommend you find a good one. The one I use is called IBVPN – Click here to go to their plans
